Keeping Busy

Keeping busy is no problem for Alan Riley, co-owner of Dugan’s Pub of Pinehurst. With St. Patrick’s Day upon us, the golf season approaching and children soon to be out of school, Dugan’s Pub is preparing for what hopes to be a good season!
Every year in November, preparations begin for the following year’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. The idea was conceived by Sharon and Dell King eight years ago. They then asked Alan to join the band wagon and now the parade has become one of Pinehurst’s best traditions, raising money for St. Baldrick’s Children’s Cancer research. Alan, parade co-chair this year, has been either chairing or co-chairing the event since its inception. “The parade takes several months to plan and execute,” Riley says. It takes many people and lots of time to plan, prepare and organize the event, which is finished in a little over an hour!
This year, Alan has teamed up with Mr. George Bonville of Bonville Construction to help with the work load. George has done the leg work, now the rest is up to Alan to line up, organize and execute. This year’s parade has over 75 entries, with approximately 400 people walking or riding in the parade. The parade, set for Saturday, March 14th, 2009 at 11am will begin at Rassie Wicker Park and will continue through the Village, via Chinquapin Rd and Cherokee Rd.
UPDATE: DUE TO INCLIMATE WEATHER, THE PINEHURST ST. PAT'S PARADE HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY, MARCH 21 AT 11AM.
This year’s parade Grand Marshall is the coaching staff of Pinecrest High School, led by Chris Metzger. Metzger and his staff were chosen for the enthusiasm and dedication that he and his coaches have shown in molding Moore County’s youth, and for their demonstration of leadership. The parade this year is also honoring local citizens who have contributed to the community. Among those to be recognized are: Village employee of the year, Tina Shepherd, Teacher of the year, Eileen Phelps and the North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association’s Cornerstone Humanitarian of the year winner, Dugan’s Pub. Dugan’s Pub received the award for its work with Back Pack Pals of Moore County.
After the parade, Dugan’s Pub has lots to offer for a great day’s entertainment. The Peat Bogg Banshees will perform authentic Irish music in the dining room from 1 – 3 pm. Downstairs, you can enjoy the Natty Bo Duo, with a guest appearance by Miss North Carolina, Amanda Watson from 12:30 – 3:30 pm. If you have lots of Irish talent, then feel free to enter the Irish Karaoke contest at 9pm, where cash prizes will be awarded! Dugan’s will be serving corned beef and cabbage, as well as, potato leek soup and all of your favorite drafts, from Guinness to George Killians, to traditional Irish Harp at special prices all day long.
Dugan’s Pub is open seven days a week, serving lunch and dinner. Dugan’s opens at 11:30 for lunch, and serves dinner until 10pm, Monday through Saturday. Sundays, Dugan’s serves from noon until 9pm. The Pub stays open until the crowd goes home, and offers a late menu on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights until midnight.
