FRIED GREEN TOMATOES

Located on a quiet side street in the “whistle stop” town of Aberdeen, NC, sits a surprising find… a restaurant named Fried Green Tomatoes.

If you have read the novel, “Fried Green Tomatoes”, or seen the movie, you may be able to guess part of the menu.  Of course, a restaurant with such a name should specialize in traditional southern food.  Fried Green Tomatoes does, but with a decidedly interesting twist…

The chef and owner of Fried Green Tomatoes is Philippe Brainos.

Philippe is a French chef, with decades of experience cooking in some very high class venues.  Since immigrating to America he has forged his own path, combining classical French culinary skills with both international ingredients and southern traditions.

Having eaten fried green tomatoes at the original Whistle Stop Café in Juliet, Georgia, we are well qualified to judge this southern delicacy.  Philippe’s are not to be missed – the breading is light but substantive and slightly peppery, and they are served with a sauce that is an interesting spin on a southern chow-chow.  The rest of his menu is equally appealing, featuring fried chicken and catfish along side lobster bisque and much more.  As Philippe says, “This is southern food with attitude… mine!”
